Talking to the Manager

At the end of Family Home Torture--Evening! I mean Evening...oops. Like I said, at the end of Family Home Evening, we had family prayer before tucking the children into bed. When Mr. Wicke finished the prayer, Logan didn't move. Sometimes she likes to fake like she is asleep so that she gets carried up to bed. (Who can blame her? Sometimes I do it, too.) But that night I was not in the mood. "Logan. Come on. I know you aren't sleeping."

She lifted her head from the couch. "He wasn't done talking to me." A few weeks back, Mr. Wicke told her that it is always a good idea to spend quiet time listening after a prayer. Just in case you feel some answer come. "He was just in the middle."

"Oh, sorry." The whole thing made me smile. I have no idea what He was saying, but I'm glad they have that kind of relationship. Boy, am I glad. 'Cause there is one thing I know: She belonged to Him before she belonged to me, and as long as He is holding her hand, we're going to be okay.

Bubba wrote a note to God the other night and left it under the lamp because "God is light" (his words). God was supposed to come at 8:00 and get it and Bubba was SO disappointed when the note was still there the next day. We had to have a little talk about the fact that God talks to you in your mind and doesn't come and pick up notes like Santa or the Tooth Fairy! But how sweet that he wrote God a note, huh?

Oh, that's the sweetest EVER! It beats Grace pledging allegiance during scripture reading.

How nice to know what you're teaching is really sinking in.

It's the moments like those that seem to make it all worth while, isn't it? So very sweet.

I know you probably didn't intend this blog for anyone other than your close circle of friends, but I stumbled upon it a couple of months ago and have been a periodic visitor (not a blog stalker!) Can I just say that you are a fabulous writer... your posts are always engaging and evocative and your voice is so authentic. You really should try to find a broader audience for your writing - a book, a column, something. This is really great stuff. Hope all is well with you. Give my best to Mr. Wicke!

Chris, I tried to go to your blog to leave a comment (as is a pretty regular practice of mine with visitors. I love meeting new people.) But alas, I could not, so this will have to do. Maybe you will come back and be able to read it.

Originally I intended this blog for my family as I live away from all of them. But strangely enough more people I don't know come to visit than those I do. And that doesn't bother me a bit. I have "met" (never in person, sadly) some of the most delightful people through blogging. And your very complimentary comment is a terrific example. You just made my day. Thank you! I have a secret dream of--well, now it won't be so secret, will it?--writing a real book someday. Encouragement like yours may actually inspire me to practice enough self-discipline and be couragous enough to try.

I'll tell Mr. Wicke you give your regards. And come by anytime just to say hi.

Talk about a humbling experience. At least it would be for me.
You've obviously been doing things right for her to "listen" after her prayer.

Laurel,
For whatever reason, I thought my identity would have been associated with my comment, but I guess only my first name was recorded. We actually have known each other for a pretty long time. I'll give you a hint: Irvine Third Ward alumnus, recently married and moved to Mesa, had a short visit with Will and Pargie while they were out here to see you guys and the Richins. Did you guess yet? Okay, one last hint: the url of my blog is halloranphoto.com. Hi!

Laurel, how sweet is that. Don't you just love those moments... when we sometimes 'forget'and our sweet children somehow bring it all back to us so quickly and so honestly. it always reminds me of the scripture... 'and a child shall lead the way'

That is something that we all need to remember... stop and listen.

Laural,

I just wanted to say that you were the one who actually introduced me to "These is my Words"! I read the copy that you sent my mom. I loved it and if I had enough money, I would pitch in to help you with the movie. Did you hear that she wrote sequals? I NEED them now that I know about them!
